Why the DNC Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

The move from the Democratic National Committee to block the release of its internal autopsy report concerning the last presidential race is remarkable but entirely predictable. Averse to hard truths, the Democrats' governing body operates closer to a communications shop than an electoral entity focused on building grassroots capacities to secure victories.

An Environment of Conformity

Reluctant to challenge the party establishment's culture of conformity, the DNC has continued within the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Publishing the findings might have shown whether party leaders are interested to foster public discourse about the strategic failures that paved the way for Donald Trump to become president again. Yet, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there are no lessons to understand from the electoral catastrophe of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," an explanation reportedly given for withholding the analysis.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Would Have Addressed

An autopsy report worth its salt would confront certain uncomfortable matters. These include:

  • Voter Alienation: Failing to retain among millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket during the previous election became a critical factor in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • A Choice to Seek Re-election: The unwavering insistence of the incumbent to seek re-election, and an extremely delayed step-aside, is seen by some as denying Democratic voters of a competitive nomination process.
  • Failing the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the electoral effort reportedly ceding to elite contributors without successfully attempting to address the role of profit-seeking.
  • The Foreign Policy Impact: The failure to adjust a stance regarding a ongoing war reportedly led to alienating key demographic groups, especially among young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Allegiance: Polling data shows a major decline in support for the party among the youth electorate.

A History of Evasion

Choosing secrecy aligns with a pattern of sidestepping hard truths. It echoes an episode in which the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Congress acquiesced to an incumbent's decision for seeking another term right up until a catastrophic public debate performance compelled a change.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers of the electorate were continually telling researchers that they opposed that candidate to seek re-election.

Campaign Spending Issues

An honest analysis might also investigate questions about financial allocations, such as the amounts were directed to party strategists as well as advertising contractors during an electoral effort which expended a staggering war chest in a short period.

The Broader Issue

Ultimately, the secrecy regarding the analysis highlights a deference to party leaders responsible for an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The implication for ordinary supporters – including countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they do not be trusted to see what the insiders have learned based on hundreds of interviews drawing from extensive interviews.

A political entity unable to critically review its mistakes is unlikely to break free from the rut that proved so advantageous to their opponents.
