In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
