As any major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
