A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
