European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
