Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."
During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
